Since it’s inception in 2019, Emma has been writer, head of research and senior producer of over 130 episodes that span everything from Boudicca to Broadway. With over 100 million downloads worldwide, You’re Dead to Me (BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 4) is one of the UK’s most popular podcasts and as of March 2025 was the #1 history podcast in America.
You’re Dead to Me has been shortlisted for the Listener’s Choice Award at the British Podcast Awards and has won the “Best Radio Entertainment” award at the British Comedy Guide Awards for four years running. -
MUSES: an Ampersand Podcast
As featured in “Radio Times” and “The Guardian”, MUSES: An Ampersand Podcast was a collaboration between academic Dr Emma Nagouse and artist Dan Smith (Bastille) which spanned history, music, art and culture.
In each funny and fascinating episode, Emma (historical consultant for the album) and Dan unpacked a different song from Dan’s chart-topping album “&”, uncovering not only Dan’s songwriting process, but the mythology, history and pop culture that surrounds each track. Topics included Emily Dickinson, Narcissus, pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao and Leonard Cohen.
Emma was nominated and shortlisted for a Radio Academy Award as Best New Presenter.MUSES also featured conversations with guests, including writer and creator of Netflix’s KAOS, Charlie Covell, documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield, and poet Lemm Sissay.
At the end of every episode, Emma (historical consultant for the album) set Dan homework around a new historical figure or theme that she’s been reading about, with Dan challenged to write a brand new song on that topic. Updates on Dan’s songwriting progress are peppered throughout the series.
MUSES: an ampersand podcast also had a sell-out live show with special guest singer and songwriter BIM at Bush Hall, London.

Homeschool History (BBC Radio 4)
Homeschool History was launched in Spring 2020 in response to pandemic-related school closures. This funny and factual history show for Radio 4 and BBC Sounds was aimed at kids of all ages, aired for two series, and won British Podcast Award for “Best Family Podcast’. Emma co-wrote HSH with Gabby Hutchinson-Crouch. Episodes included The Space Race, Matoaka (also known as Pocahontas) and The First Emperor of China.

Emma also has a range of other broadcasting and writing credits including TL;DR with Catherine Bohart (BBC Radio 4), Square Pegs (BBC comedy sketch pilot for Mighty Bunny Productions) and a suite of educational videos for BBC Ideas in collaboration with the Open University on topics including Josephine Baker and Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao.
Emma has co-written and produced a brand new children’s history podcast series for BBC Radio due for release later in 2025.
